Not only and but also normally go immediately before the words or expressions modified by them.

• The place was not only good, but also safe. 
• She is not only a good wife, but also a good mother. 
• She speaks not only English, but also French. 

Mid position with verb is also possible.

• She not only speaks English, but also French. 

For emphasis not only can be moved to the beginning of a clause. Note that we use the inverted word order 'not only + auxiliary verb + subject'. But can be left out in some cases.

• She was not only sad, but also angry. 
• Not only was she sad, she was also angry. 
• They not only need food, but also shelter. 
• Not only do they need food, they also need shelter.

not only ~ but also 구문을 살펴 보겠습니다.

1. 의미

not only A but also B :  A 뿐만 아니라 B이기도 하다.

2. 특성

A와 B는 병치(비슷한 것끼리 연결한다)구조이기 때문에, A에 명사가 오면 B에도 명사가

A에 동사가 오면 B에도 동사가 A에 형용사가 오면 B에도 형용사가 오게 됩니다.

3. 위치

보통 꾸며 주는 단어 앞에 놓인다.

그리고 Not only가 문두에 나오면, 주어 동사는 도치되고

동사의 수(단/복)는 but also 이하에 일치시킨다.

4. 생략 및 같은 표현

not only ~ but (also) 와 같이also는 생략 가능하다.

not only[merely, simply, just, alone] ~ but ... as well[too] 와 같이 바꿔 사용할 수 있다.

- She is not only beautiful but also clever.

그녀는 아름다울 뿐만 아니라 똑똑하기까지 하다. (형용사 beautiful 과 형용사 clever 병치)

- He not only has a cold but also a headache.

그는 감기에 걸렸을 뿐만 아니라 두통도 있다. (명사 cold 와 headche 병치)

- Not only you but (also) she is pretty.

너 뿐만 아니라 그녀도 이쁘다. (you 와 she 병치 // 동사는 she에 일치시킴)
